The Video Platform Grants Users Authority to Limit AI-Generated Content in Timelines

TikTok is introducing a fresh option that permits them to lessen the amount of AI-made media appearing in their timelines. This move comes as the service revealed that it now features more than 1 thousand million content made with AI.

Testing and Rollout

The new functionality is being tested over the next few weeks before a global launch. This development coincides with a surge in AI content, fueled by emerging AI video creators.

The Broader AI Trend

Studies have shown that almost one in 10 of the most rapidly expanding content creators on a competing service primarily display content made by AI. A large amount of this content is classified as “AI slop”, a label for substandard, mass-produced content that is typically absurd or surreal.

Our research shows that a lot of users appreciate content made with AI tools, ranging from AI artwork to science explainers, and we aim to offer the community the option to see more or less of that, depending on their own preferences,” commented a platform representative.

AI on the Platform

TikTok shared that there are currently over a billion videos on its app identified as made with AI. Collectively, over 100 m pieces of content are uploaded to the service daily, making clips made by AI a relatively small portion of its total content library.

Customizing Your Feed

Members will be able to reduce or increase the amount of AI content they see by using the topic control setting in the application and selecting “AI-generated content”. Other topics that can already be modified under the setting cover politics, style, aesthetics, and dance.

Content Labeling and Policies

The platform’s policies oblige creators to tag lifelike AI-made content, and it prohibits malicious deepfakes of public figures or crisis events. Any authentic-looking AI video that is unmarked can be removed under its user guidelines.

Additionally, the service will from now on attach an AI-generated watermark to content created with its own AI tools, or flagged by an collaborative effort for spotting AI-generated material. This measure is designed to deter users from seeking to bypass the labeling process.

Educational Initiatives

TikTok is also launching a $2 million educational fund for experts and groups to develop learning resources about ethical AI use. This program will assist educational bodies dedicated to training coding and technology.

Platform Protection

TikTok has supported its safety measures, following discussion over intentions to make redundant a large number of review team members in the United Kingdom. It is set to eliminate a significant number of roles in its user protection team in London, with labor groups and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that humans are being replaced by AI moderation.

A senior executive stated that people-led review would continue to be important, but artificial intelligence can safeguard staff by eliminating the most distressing content prior to it gets reviewed by humans. TikTok announced a notable drop in explicit and harmful content reviewed by content reviewers over the last 12 months due to the use of its automated systems.

It is vital to integrate people and machines to maintain a secure environment,” the official commented. “We’ll have people as part of that process, but we also think it’s very important to limit contact with dangerous material as swiftly, which is why a lot of the machine support is proving valuable work at speed.”
