Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
